ARTIST COLLAB: This is our first artist-collab release. We have had the privilege of creating the LOOK/SEE x The Pressure "Sun God" sunglasses with Adam R. Garcia, founder of The Pressure, a design studio based in Portland, OR. Adam has a unique interest in mythology and etymology. So when he started to work on this project, he took insight from his Mexican-American heritage and pulled a story from Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec Sun God.
FRAME: There are numerous details on these sunglasses which connect to the "Sun God" story:
_ Adam created a hand-drawn graphic containing elements and symbols of the Aztec culture, which we then used to create a one-of-a-kind custom acetate for the frame.
_ The Aztecs believed that in order to keep the sun rising day after day, they would have to offer a human sacrifice. As a result, the red on the inside of the frame along with the metal "bleeding heart" inlay along the inner right temple symbolizes the blood and human sacrifice attributed to the myth of Huitzilopochtli.
_ Huitzilopochtli, in the Aztec language of Nauhuatl, translates to "hummingbird on left". As a result, Adam added a metal hummingbird along the inner left temple which sits just behind your left ear.
_ Lastly, the whole idea of creating Sun God sunglasses is that you are essentially sacrificing a little bit of energy to the sun every time you put them on.
